Method of carpet weaving is considerably gone away from primary
products of thick weaving, which was an imitation of animals skin.
This art, in course of time, has reformed to an extent, to offer a
beautiful, attractive product; but still, tools of work have kept the
same simplicity of the past: Comb, scissors, knife, loom, awl, stroke
stick of weft puller, hook, …
Tools
of carpet weaving, according to various centers of carpet weaving are
slightly different and divided into two groups: Turkish and Persian
tools. The highest difference concerns knife of carpet weaving, which
in Turkish weave, has a hook-shaped head, but in Persian weave, carpet
is woven by fingers.
Comb,
scissors and hook are utilized in both methods notwithstanding some
slight differences such as weight or size and feature of tools.
Although
the role of these tools is not as important as other instruments, such
as loom, warp and raw materials, but quality of tools and their
application makes a great deal on weaver’s
prosperity and success. One is supposed to fix some thousand knots on
carpet, benefiting those tools and to realized images of carpet,
therefore quality and type of tools, sharpness, lack of coarseness or
outstanding points on knife edge or stick and other factors are very
effective, not only in right weaving and accelerating the job, but
have a direct effect on the nerve and moral of weaver.
Any
softlessness or scar and coarseness on knife edge, or bluntness and
heaviness of scissors along with carelessness of weaver may harm and
damage warps. Whereas manufacture of those tools, usually are made by
hand, needs skill and experience like other manual professions and the
best tools are made by artisans having a long experience.
