March 20, Engels' father dies.
March 23-April 6, Engels is in Barmen, in connection with his father's death.
April, Engels' Savoy, Nice and Rhine appears in Berlin

1860 to 1864, Engels contributes to "Allgemeine Militar-Zeitung" and "Volunteer Journal" for "Lancashire and Cheshire".


1861:
April 1861-1865, US Civil War, Engels writes a number of articles about the struggle of North and South for "New York Daily Tribune" and Vienna liberal newspaper "Die Presse".


1863:
January 6, Engels' wife, Mary Burns, dies in Manchester.


1864:
May 9, Wilhelm Wolff, a faithful friend of Marx and Engels, dies in Manchester.

July 1, Engels becomes co-proprietor of Ermen & Engels.

Sept. 28, an international meeting in St. Martin Hall, London, resolves to establish "International Working Men's Association" (the First International). Marx is elected member of its Provisional Committee, later renamed "Central Council" and then "General Council".

Nov. 4, In a letter to Engels, Marx informs him of the establishment of "International Association" and about his work on the program documents of new proletarian organization. Later, too, Marx keeps Engels abreast of the state of affairs in International.

Nov. 7, in his reply, Engels welcomes the founding of "International Working Men's Association".

Nov. 24, Marx sends Engels the just published "Inaugural Address and Provisional Rules" of "International Working Men's Association".

End of 1864-Feb. 1865, Marx and Engels contribute to "Der Social Demokrat", a newspaper of "General Association of German Workers". They hope to use it to propagate scientific communism in Germany. But the newspaper continues to flirt with Bismarck government and Marx and Engels notify it of their refusal to collaborate with it.
