In the last two
centuries, round or circular forms have been used more
than any others, in order to convey concepts in
painting and graphic arts.
This has been an unconscious act on the part of
artists, who may complement one form with another.
But, the circle has been the most widely present,
because it is a symbol of the sky, the sun, the
fluidity, and it is more in agreement with pictorial
imagery.
It is sometimes used from a formal perspective to
create contradiction and visual variety among straight
and angular lines and surfaces.
