A
visit to Burnaby Village Museum is like stepping into a
time machine. This 4-hectare (10-acre) open-air museum
features a village, a farmhouse and historic CW Parker
Carousel. One will love wondering through its streets,
where costumed townspeople welcome into more than 30
picturesque shops and homes. Tour a one-room school-house,
a Chinese herbalist store and a blacksmith's shop.
Demonstrations, exhibits and displays reveal life as it
was in Burnaby back in 1925.
The city's civic museum, Burnaby Village Museum is now one
of the largest in BC. The collection was mainly acquired
through donations and consists of more than 40,000
artifacts. Some are particularly significant to Burnaby's
history, while others represent day-to-day items found in
a home or store in the early 1900's.
CW Parker Carousel
One of fewer than 200 hand-carved woven carousels still
operating in North America, CW Parker Carousel, was built
in Leavenworth, Kansas in 1912. Today, the carousel
carries 36 horses, four cat aluminum ponies, a chariot and
wheelchair. It was lovingly rebuilt by a volunteer group,
Friends of the Carousel, and is accompanied by a 1925
Wurlitzer military band organ. A ride on this stunning
carousel, housed in Don Wrigley Pavilion, is an essential
part of any visit to Burnaby Village Museum.
Exhibitions
Burnaby Village Museum has a permanent gallery space,
located in the center of the village, at Stride Studios.
Gallery hosts a variety of fascinating theme displays. As
you wander around the village, you'll also find window
displays and other seasonal exhibits that are changed
regularly. The museum also has traveling exhibits for
loan.
Heritage Gardens
A walking tour of the Burnaby Village Museum grounds
includes the beautifully re-created market garden at the
Love Farmhouse and the flower gardens surrounding the
stately Elworth residence. Many of the trees, shrubs,
flowers and vegetables are prize-winning originals and
descendants of seeds first planted in the 1920s.
