Sounio, The Temple of Poseidon
The imposing Temple of Poseidon, erected in 5th century BC, was dedicated to
the god of the sea, is situated by the sea and is facing the open
Aegean Sea.
Mycenae
Mycenae is the most important pre-historical archeological site of
the mainland, situated on east Peloponnese. It has been brought into
light at the end of 19th century by Henrich Schlieman. Cyclopean
fortification walls of Acropolis, the beehive tomb of Atreus (the so
called Agamemnon's grave) are some of its important monuments. From
the top of the Acropolis, one can enjoy the view of Argolic valley,
with orange-graves, Acropolis of Argos and Nauplia, as well as
Argolic Gulf. The countryside is fantastic.
Delphi
At the foot of the mountain Parnas, Delphi offers a fantastic view
of the olive graves of Amphissa, overlooking the Corinthian Gulf and
the mountains of Peloponnese. For the ancient Greeks, Delphi was the
center "the navel" of the Earth. The impressive
archeological site of Delphi, the Sanctuary of Apollo and Delphi
Museum, with "Charioteer" exhibits, are among the places
of interest.
Epidaurus
Epidaurus is the most famous theatre of ancient Greece. It was built
in 4th century BC and it is one of the best-preserved ancient
theatres. It is world famous for its extraordinary acoustic, which
is the result of the high technical knowledge of the time. It is
used nowadays, during summer, for Athens Festival theatrical
performances.
