The temples here stand unrivalled for the beauty of their
carving.
Hindu God Jagannath is worshipped in the temple in Puri,
63 km from Bhubaneswar. This idol is taken out annually in
procession on a giant wood chariot, which resembles the
structure of a temple. "Juggernaut" is derived
from this ritual.
Bhubaneswar, the capital of Orissa, is an ancient
cathedral city, with over a hundred medieval temples.
Another architectural masterpiece in Orissa is the 13th
century Sun Temple in Konarak, 85 km from Puri. Built as a
chariot with 12 pairs of wheels, this temple has some marvelous
carving.
