Marina Hemingway
Located west of Havana, Marina Hemingway (formerly
Marina Barlovento) is a residential/tourism
development, named after the celebrated writer
Ernest Hemingway.
On any given morning, yachts from all over the world
can be found moored in various of its 400 berths,
its free-port status guaranteeing easy access to
vessels arriving from neighboring islands, such as
Bahamas. The marina is like a small, self-contained
city with all the essential services; there are
modern, architecturally avant-grade hotels and
others with the more traditional atmosphere
preferred by participants in the numerous,
world-renowned sport-fishing events held annually.
One of the oldest and most prestigious of the latter
is the mid-May Ernest Hemingway International
Needlefish Tournament (founded in 1950). October’s
International Blue Marlin Tournament is also a big
draw.
However, one doesn’t have to be the owner of a
luxury yacht to enjoy other activities as water
skiing, jet skiing or just rowing around the bay;
underwater there are coral reefs waiting to be
explored by diving enthusiasts and afterwards an
exquisite lobster dinner awaits at one of the
marina’s various restaurants.
Marina Hemingway is open 24 hours a day, and
nighttime finds the port transformed. The boats at
anchor, faintly illuminated by rays of moonlight,
filtering through the clouds, change color among
with the capricious sea, and with the sounds of live
music from Los Caneyes night club wafting over the
water, the day of nautical diversions finally ends.
